Free Counseling Available to Returning SoldiersNon-Profits Provide Veterans and Their Families with Free Services
Soldiers and Vets who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and their family members have free counseling and PTSD treatment available from non-profit organizations.
Non-profit organizations are offering free treatment to returned Iraq/Afghanistan veterans and their families. The services are free of charge, and there are programs available both regionally and nationwide. America Supports You offers a large listing of articles and resources, including scholarship opportunities, bereavement support and job placement. Free Telephone Support Available to VeteransThe National Veterans Foundation maintains a national crisis and assistance line for and staffed by veterans. The phone line is open 7 days a week from 9am-9pm pacific and can be reached by dialing the national toll-free crisis management, information & referral lifeline for veterans and families at 1-888-777-4443. Military One Source offers free and reduced priced counseling or resource referrals for soldiers and their families. Soldiers and family members may call toll free anytime to 1-800-342-9647 to receive help with deployment or adjustment issues including childcare. Free Conventional Counseling for VeteransGive An Hour offers free therapy sessions to soldiers and family. They "are offering (their) services to anyone who is or has been affected directly or indirectly (through a relationship with someone in the military) by the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan." Providers are licensed mental health professionals that donate one hour per week to service Give An Hour clients free of charge. Give An Hour lists providers available for phone support and counseling on their website. The Soldiers Project offers free confidential counseling for soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan and their family members. Free Horse Therapy Programs for VeteransBack in the Saddle, Bit by Bit (B.I.T.S.) offers a program that combines horseback riding with counseling for veterans, their immediate families and families of deceased soldiers. Located in Colorado, the organization hopes to expand into other areas in the near future. Operation Silver Spurs combines 2 programs for veterans, The Wisdom of the Horse and Horses for Heroes, to provide veterans with the tools necessary to adapt and lead productive lives. Based on Lone Eagle Ranch in Colorado, the program offers free exhibitions and horseback riding for all veterans.
